Brown Motion Pictures film crews offer a wide range of positions for driven students of all technical backgrounds and experience levels. Descriptions of positions, ranked in order of required experience and time commitment, can be found below.

Crew Role Descriptions:

ADVANCED |  Prior experience recommended, most time intensive

  • Producer - Take charge of logistical details throughout during pre-production (location scout, build shooting schedule, manage film budget), production (assisting on set when needed, liaise between crew and third-parties such as Student Activities Office, location owners, etc.), and post-production (streamline editing process, assist Director’s communication with Editor, Composer)

  • Director Of Photography - Develop visual style of the film, storyboard and create shot list before production begins, and operate camera and lighting equipment in tandem with Gaffer and Assistant Camera

  • Editor - Responsible for the brunt of post-production work: utilize advanced editing software (e.g. Final Cut, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, etc.) to assemble footage, color correct, and mix sound, communicate with Director and DP about footage and editing goals, and begin editing while production is still on-going to get ahead

      INTERMEDIATE | No prior experience necessary, moderately time-intensive

  • Assistant Director - Liaise communication between Director and crew both on-set and during pre-production, create weekly call sheets, keep track of small details, and serve as a second-hand for all Director’s responsibilities

  • Assistant Producer - Assist Producer in logitsitical details, taking on tasks during pre-production and production periods to steamline progress

  • Sound Mixer - Work closely with editing team to create clean audio in post-production and be responsible for editing foley sounds, adjusting dialogue recordings, and finalizing all audio tracks

  • Production Designer - Work closely with Director and DP to establish the film's aesthetic, create the physical world in which the film is set, manage prop selection, and set up locations prior to shoot

  • Composer - Utilize deep understanding of music composition/theory to craft an appropriate score for the film, working closely with Director

  • Gaffer - Set up lighting for scenes to help establish the film’s visual language, working in tandem with Director and DP’s visions

  • Makeup - Apply makeup to actors on set

ENTRY-LEVELNo prior experience necessary, least time-intensive

  • Script Supervisor - Take detailed “scriptie” notes on-set working closely with script and shot list to ensure the film’s continuity and prepare for editing

  • Production Assistant - Provide support in all areas of production such as lighting, camera, sound, and production design (a great way to learn the ropes, gaining hands-on experience on set)

  • Assistant Camera - Assist DP in camera operation, focusing, moving/breaking down camera and lighting equipment, and creating shot lists

  • Assistant Editor - Utilize advanced editing software to assist Editor in assembling footage, and responsible for editing the trailer for the film

  • Sound Recordist - Set up and operate sound recording equipment on set and monitor audio, get trained by Tech Coordinator prior to production

  • Grip - Assist gaffer in setting up lighting

  • Boom Operator- Record sound on set, positioning boom mic in optimal place for recording audio
